Dr. Newsom specializes in assessment of neurodevelopmental differences including Autism Spectrum disorders. He sees children aged four years and older in his assessment practice.
Autism assessments are among the most complex assessments done by psychologists. These assessments begin with an extensive background and developmental questionnaire and parent interviews. Objective questionnaires are used to gather a wide range of information about the client’s social, emotional and behavioral functioning from parents and teachers. Neuropsychological and psycho-educational testing are used to help understand the client’s cognitive, language and educational abilities as well as helping understand underlying neural differences. Specialized procedures are used to help diagnose Autism if a disorder is present and to help understand how the Autism is expressed in individual children.
Every assessment is followed by a feedback session where all results and recommendations are discussed. The written report is issued after receiving input from parents during the feedback session.
These assessment reports are used in a variety of setting. Therapists and physicians use them to assist treatment planning. Insurance companies frequently require them prior to approving treatment. They are used to help attain disability benefits. They are frequently used by schools in ARD meetings to support special education needs. Dr. Newsom has completed Full Individual Evaluations (FIE) and Independent Educational Evaluations (IEE) for Autism for several school districts in Texas.
